Velvet revolution celebration

By

On November 17th each year is the velvet revolution celebration event in Czech and the biggest event with 100,000 persons in downtown Prague.

This celebration is to remember the velvet revolution where communist power was handed over fairly peacefully to a more democratic and socialist government and Russia released control of this county and several other bordering countries about this year. Speeches, parades, concerts, and information helping to remember the struggles to get democracy and freedoms in this previously communist run country. Velvet refers to how soft and easy this transition was compared to events just a few years earlier that brought in tanks from Russia to control this country.
